Talented, best-selling author Gregg Olsen focuses on two neighbor couples and their relationships after a small boy goes missing. Liz and Owen look at Carole and David and see a couple who has everything, including Charlie. Liz has an accident, Charlie vanishes, and Liz chooses to lie about it. Her lies blossom into something much bigger, and several lives are ruined.

While Olsen is a master story-teller, and is able to add building suspense to his novels, the subject matter and storyline here made me uncomfortable, and I didn’t want to continue reading after putting myself in the characters’ places. It just wasn’t enjoyable to read, and I kept putting it aside meaning to get back to it when I was in the mood. However, it seems I was never in the mood to read something that I wasn’t enjoying.

Olsen does an excellent job of developing his characters, and as they were developed, I found I wanted to put down the book and not finish. Rarely do I not finish a book that I’ve started, but this is one that put me on edge, and not in a good way. I didn’t like the characters, nor did I care what happened to them. Usually Olsen’s characters are fascinating, but in this case they are not.

Although the novel is well-written, full of suspense, and has plenty of ups and downs that keep most readers on the edge of their seats, this one didn’t do it for me. Usually a Gregg Olsen fan, I understand that everything he writes can’t all be wonderful, and this is that one. I know that the scenarios may be interesting for other thriller fans, and having read Olsen several times before and enjoyed them, I will try his next book and hope it is better than this one.
